Income insurance
If you are a professional member of Engineers of Sweden and a member of the Akademikernas a-kassa unemployment fund, our highly beneficial income insurance is included in your membership fee at no extra cost. The insurance is provided by Akademikernas Inkomstförsäkring through Folksam. If you are a student member, you can include your student membership period in the qualifying period for income insurance if you upgrade to full membership.
For professional members
If you are a professional member of Engineers of Sweden and a member of the Akademikernas a-kassa unemployment fund, our highly beneficial income insurance is included in your membership fee at no extra cost. This insurance means you can receive up to 80 per cent compensation for a gross monthly salary of up to SEK 100,000 for up to 150 days if you become unemployed involuntarily.

Who can receive compensation?
To be covered by the income insurance, you must also meet the applicable terms and be a member of both Engineers of Sweden and the Akademikernas a-kassa unemployment fund.
Become a member of Engineers of Sweden
Become a member of Akademikernas a-kassa
If you are a member of another unemployment fund, you need to switch to Akademikernas a-kassa to be eligible for the income insurance offered by Engineers of Sweden.
To be eligible for income insurance from Engineers of Sweden, you need to meet the following conditions:
- You must be entitled to compensation from Akademikernas a-kassa.
- You must have been a member of Engineers of Sweden for at least 12 months and be registered as a professional member before your first day of unemployment.
- You must be involuntarily unemployed.
- Your compensation level from a-kassa must start at 80 percent.
- You must have been granted 300 compensation days by Akademikernas a-kassa, meaning you have met the income requirement for 11–12 months within the qualifying period.

- You must have been a member of Engineers of Sweden continuously for the 12 months preceding unemployment.
- You must have been employed for at least 12 months in the 18 months prior to becoming unemployed, and for at least 80 hours per month*
- You must have started an unemployment insurance period with two qualifying days through the Akademikernas a-kassa unemployment fund.
- You must be entitled to earnings-related compensation when your unemployment insurance period begins.
- You must have been registered as a professional member of Engineers of Sweden before you became unemployed.
- You must be involuntarily unemployed.
Qualification period from another union
When switching unions without any disruption between the two membership periods, your prior union's income insurance qualification period may remain valid for the first 12 months of your new membership, should you become involuntarily unemployed.
As there are exceptions, we recommend that you contact Akademikernas inkomstförsäkring at Folksam at 0770-78 20 50 to confirm the specifics of your situation.
If you become involuntarily unemployed and need to claim income insurance benefits within the first 12 months of your membership with Engineers of Sweden, you will be required to provide a certificate from your previous union.
You only need to submit this certificate to our insurance provider if you are filing a claim for income insurance benefits.

Supplementary income insurance

You can choose to purchase supplementary insurance for a monthly salary of up to SEK 160,000 and/or an additional 150 days, which provides a total of 300 days of compensation if you become involuntarily unemployed.
Income Insurance and Akademikernas a-kassa requirement
To be covered by the income insurance that’s included in your membership in Sveriges Ingenjörer, it requires you to also be a member of Akademikernas a-kassa - online application.
If you are a member of another unemployment fund, you will need to switch to Akademikernas a-kassa. They will be happy to help you transfer. To get started, please fill out this online form to switch a-kassa. Akademikernas a-kassa will then handle the transfer from your current unemployment fund, ensuring a seamless transition. You only need to fill out the form.
New rules for unemployment benefits apply from October 1, 2025. Income affects eligibility, membership impacts benefit levels, and the benefit period depends on how long you've had an income. Student membership and Income insurance
While income insurance is not a benefit of student membership, your time as a student member of Engineers of Sweden contributes to your income insurance qualification. Just remember to upgrade to professional membership after finishing your studies or when your work hours become greater than your study hours. Income insurance benefits are only available to professional members, and you must be a registered professional member before becoming unemployed.
Remember to upgrade your membership
Once you have finished your studies or and started working, it is important that you register as a professional member. Only professional members of Engineers of Sweden are eligible to receive compensation from the union's income insurance. You must also be a member of the Akademikernas a-kassa unemployment fund.
You can upgrade from student to professional membership for just SEK 65 per month until the end of your first year. This applies to both members who have graduated and those who have started working without completing their degree but have at least 165 ECTS credits.
